Ava DuVernay's birth was on August 24 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay received encouragement from Aunt Denise when she was an infant. Her aunt worked the night shifts as a nursing assistant to ensure she could pursue her love of theater and literature in the daytime. DuVernay immediately was captivated when she showed her the 1959 West Side Story film. DuVernay realized after watching her mother's examples of the power of art as an instrument for activism. DuVernay grew up with a mother who was socially aware and taught her to utilize the arts as a means to express herself. DuVernay, who grew up together with her parents in Compton and spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama in the family home of her father. DuVernay's Father recalled witnessing the historic march of Civil Rights Movement on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. It was held in Selma Alabama, a neighboring city. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to help inspire her future film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay was a graduate from Saint Joseph High School Lakewood California, in 1990. DuVernay went to the University of California Los Angeles following her graduation, and received degrees in English as well as African American Studies. DuVernay developed an interest in broadcast journalism as a student. Her first job was as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the house and examining the garbage belonging to one of the juries. Due to her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism, and shifted into the business of publicity. DuVernay was immediately hired from college to be a junior publicist at a small studio. The DuVernay Agency is her first agency for public relations. In addition to PR her agency also launched several lifestyle and promotional networks including The Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
